And finally a Kingfisher ...... always a kingfisher, note the lack of distinguishing characteristics at that distance. I however would know a Kingfisher anywhere. Not another bird like him!

Gosh that was a lovely hour or so, I felt like I was in a movie, I
just sat on a low wall thing and
watched the butterflys flit.
I may do it again today, smile,
or not?

I sat in my car for a while,
so that the birds might get
used to me. I photographed
the butterflys.....I came back
and watched the birds again.
by that time they were quite used
to me. The tree was very large,
the lighting difficult, but I loved
having access to all of these little birds. I had never seen
anything like this before.

http://upacreekPHOTOGRAPHY.smugmug.com/photos/108289709-L.jpgRetired and happy in South Carolina. A Sunday Fisherman.
We are happy here, but the air
at Pitt Street Bridge was a bit
chilly!
Please see the alternate of those moments alone with nature, and the photographer who
won't stop taking photos, smile:
http://upacreekPHOTOGRAPHY.smugmug.com/photos/108588978-L.jpgAnother happy southern fisherman
I chose this one of him as I am
reflected in his glasses, though I doubt that you can see me. You might get more idea of what is seeing by the reflection.
He was very nice. He was in mid cast with his fish pole when he stopped and was totally aware of me. I laughed and said, "Let her rip". That is all I said, except my mumbling about "birds".
Also, due to fortunate circumstances I have two cameras around my neck: my 30D and my sick 20D, or bill's 20D. Either way that allows me to have a lens for the people and a lens for the birds. Makes my mumbling somewhat believable, and my neck a bit sore, smile. Fortunate for the moment!
Here is my alternate: it shows this same man from more of a distance. This bridge used to be for a trolley across the marsh and the inland waterway to Sullivan's Island, so in this photo you can see the island, with Stella Maris church where I go, and the inland waterway with a boat.
Happy people!!! me and them....

and were they ever noisy! So, I took their photo. They thought that was cool.
(so it is a little soft, but I like the action, the colors remind me of the Dick and Jane books)
And you all probably thought that all there are at Pitt Street are a bunch of birds, smile.
For in focus, full frame close up, see this link:
http://upacreekphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/1733122/1/109021672/LargeFor MOM, the pesky Kingfisher! You know I can ID these birds when they are still just specks in the sky. They fly like a Kingfisher, look like a Kingfisher, etc. I am noticing this bird all over the marsh. No longer just sitting, at least not near me.
So, I am still trying to "get" that Kingfisher shot. Wanted to show you that I regularly shoot them. My lens wouldn't focus he was so small and at a distance, so I tried manual. These aren't great, I mean I doubt anyone would buy them, but they will go into my Kingfisher Gallery as a record of how hard I am trying. Remember the white on the face is characteristic of a Kingfisher, the eye is behind the white. I can't get it to show at this distance, etc.
ginger (take your pick)Best Seat In The House, as the sun sets.
for Tuesday
(If you don't like that crop, not much, I have others) smile, let me know.....
Work flow: crop to a vert 8 X 10, RGB curves, Sat +20, Sharpened bird only, reduced any noise that might have been in the blue sky, went to selective colors and raised the red about +20, in the red I raised the yellow a bit + 15, maybe. The bird was excluded from any of that with the rope thingy. I did not try to lighten the bird, but didn't think he needed to go darker. The last thing I did was take the burn tool and brush it lightly at a low setting over the bottom branches so they would show the red more and blend into the top "branches".
The original as came from RAW is here. It is actually the large version of the original. It is in a private gallery. I can make the huge original avail here, but remember it is only as came from RAW. Let me know if you want to see more. Advice now is welcome. ginger
http://upacreekPHOTOGRAPHY.smugmug.com/photos/110354866-L.jpgUse of a filter under Render. The omni filter to highlight the bird.
The sky became muddy, so I went to LAB and put blue back into the sky.
You can do as you wish re comments, etc. But my photo for today is the one below. I am just playing with filters and sharing. This photo did not lend itself to watercolors. It sure made a nice dramatic Glowing Edges, but that was a bit extreme for a photo.
gingerThose little birds in fall folliage, Boone Hall, SC
for Friday
Geez those little birds are hard to "find", then to put the camera on them, after they have come somewhere in the open.
And that camera by then, in my hands, with my arm, weighs a bunch.
No, a tripod wouldn't work. It is anywhere at any moment and can be all over in seconds.
I consider myself fortunate here.
Maybe if I had a nice big backyard and a chair to sit in with the tree right there????
I try to look these birds up..the little ones, I get lost.

http://upacreekphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/2087508/1/110909437/LargePesky KF: I used the Poster Edges filter on this (totally diff from the "edges" filter that I use all the time). This time I wanted to create an effect. The other one is to enhance but not create an effect. The way I use them.
I have seen the Kingfisher on that sign one other time and didn't get him. This time I shot first, not perfect, but I did get him. And I will keep trying. Love that sign.
I think it is closed to Shell Fishing, and/or Oysters. He, of course, totally ignores the sign. I LOVE it!!!! Such a cool bird!

BLOOMING COTTON with a hint of danger
as I am watching those fields and seeing yellow flowers with the cotton, I am going to have to read up on this. Which comes first the flower or the cotton?
The wasp/bee/hornet? matches the yellow of the flower.
This might look a mite soft. Not all over, but it was f2.8, took it when I saw the dangerous insect. I still think it is cool, and I love the cotton. Uh, it is not a butt shot. There must be more to this than that? I will link you back to the bigger picture that I worked up a few days ago. I call it "my wallpaper shot". Love it, actually. Cotton and two little flowers:

Bad weather coming here, oh, boy... I want to get out and shoot.
we might even get snow. Hope I get up to Sara's again Thursday. Nice time today, everyone is very tired!
gingerAnd we know what he will be doing for Thanksgiving! Though, so far, that beautiful weather of last monday, 11/20 is not back yet. I just awoke to clouds. Supposed to clear up through the day!
I hope the Great Blue Heron has many fish. And I hope you all have great meals at the place of your choosing.

another little bird from yesterday, in flight, too, but whole shot is diff. The background here is the sky, in the other one, there is more tree, and the background is the grass, so more gold, really oof gold, kind of cool: sets off the tree, IMO.

11/27/2006
Actual fall colors of South Carolina. In my experience, we don't get this color. Some time in the spring the leaves just fall off w/o ceremony. But this year, I am seeing these glorious colors. I know it is almost Dec and fall colors are supposed to be over. But this is what it looked like on my quest for birds yesterday (Mon AM)
One of my other favorite photos so far, for yesterday.. This is what I walked to get: birds. Found wonderful color here and got me some birds, too. My favorite bird, other than the wood stork, is the Snowy Egret. He does not disappoint. Please see him on his own private dock (maybe that is what "private dock", no trespassing meant, smile).

The dark part is the dock!
My choice: for Friday (filter applied, reduced to about 20%, then the whole filter erased from the bird.
Gradient filter in layers. Blend mode Multiply, use reverse, use 157 for the size of the gradient. Use triangle, very unusual, usually use one of the others. turn on multiply to position the gradient with the move tool. Then reduce multiply to taste. I like to make it so subtle as not to be noticed.

Comments from a couple of people on another list. They know about this kind of thing. One of them regularly plays bluegrass. Am sharing their comments, good information.:
Great shot, Ginger! I love that angle -- that's what I see a lot when I'm playing with fiddlers...standing right there with 'em. I can tell he is an old time sort of player cuz of the way he has his left hand -- very unorthodox...but that shows that he learned from other old guys maybe decades ago and didn't do what the "classical" folks do. I have jammed with some old guys who are pretty decent players and they have such interesting postures. It's very cool!
I loved that too, Ginger! xxxx is spot on -- I don't ever recall seeing that particular kind of hand position, but it took me right back to seeing the old guys who learned from greatuncles and granddads instead of from MTV! I may have a list of things I'd like to do in this lifetime, but you've reminded me that I also have a good list of things I have done. And listening to good music in the southern Appalachians is one of them. Great shot.
