Carolina Manatees are free
in that they are found wild
along the coast. I had not
known anyone would put this
beautiful animal in a zoo.
They have their independence
in Charleston, so the sighting
was totally appropriate and
meaningful. Let us preserve
and protect the wetlands.
see this site for close up photos and more info.

thanks, ginger (that gallery is linked to the dGrin Community)Island Bar
(since I moved to the area and before. Merchant Marine, he gets
around, I have photographed him
before. The name of the bar: Bert's The place, Sullivan's island.)
July 3, 2006
(my camera is broken again.) It took me until 2:30 AM talking to Canon, running some errands, finding a photo for today. Love this place, this man is super cool, but wanted to let you know the other stuff. I have two baptisms today. Am using Bill's camera, who knows what the future holds. Don't think I want to know.

Hey, maybe I could hide in Bert's Bar for a month or so! Until all this bad stuff goes away! Just a thought.
Note photo behind the bar on the wall, I purposely took the photo with him at the left to show the Coppertone thing. No, he did not look in the other direction, then he had to go and RAN out of the bar.
OK, Rutt, what did I do wrong with this guy? I like it! Why is it not liked like yours are?
Plus, smoking has been banned on the island. takes place in a matter of days or weeks. This bar is a smoker's hangout. This is a shot of history!
I sharpened the eye a bit more and replaced that photo with this one. The eye looks so sharp that I could swear he is wearing contacts. I know he is wearing a hearing aid, but that is not an "eye" thing, smile.
Don't know if it looks better or not. I had used levels to make the face a bit lighter than the rest, plus I had done that to the eye in particular. That may have hurt the contrast.Ibis are sociable birds

For Wednesday, ginger
(Something is wrong with something
on my computer. I managed to get
these uploaded on a very slow port to an overloaded C: drive. I am not happy about this.)
But I wanted to see the photos I took yesterday, 7/11/2006
I may have lost all of the photos on my external hard drive, except for the ones on Smugmug.Hidden away!
No bird there.
He was aware of me, so
for protection he fished
from behind the grass!
(this might be a bit soft, I did the best I could, but I love the concept, his, and the reflections in the water.)
This is also for Thursday's consideration! It is well composed, the reflections are gorgeous, IMO, it has a painterly look, his action is amusing to me.......however, I did work a bit to sharpen up the eye. The rest of the bird is as the bird was. It is an example of a good shot that is really pretty much of a "good miss", but I like it. Wanted to share with someone!Leaving Pitt St Bridge.

Color photograph,
full color!
I left a bit of grain.
Seemed to suit!
Also, I shifted the hue a bit
to the greenish side, such hue
as there is!
You all have seen many photos
from that area....on a clear
evening! (Birds, Landscapes
and people. Even simple fishermen
with the newest of equipment.....)Wood Stork as seen past a tree with moss.........to another tree!
They are making a come back in the low country of South carolina. They are my favorite bird for looks. I will show you one up close another day.
f 22, I think, to get that depth of field. Had my 70-200 on the camera. Sharp, it really is! I checked before I worked it up.Portrait In Black
7/25/2006
I have no idea how to title this picture. I think it is one of the strongest things I have done, but it is totally an invasion of her privacy in a very stereotypical way, IMO. Farmer's Market, Mt Pleasant, SC.
This photo is not for sale, so the whole gallery will have to be marked that way. I have no release, and I did not ask. I would not have gotten this photo if I had asked.Bird: Green Heron Here is a "link" to another photo from a different perspective. Same bird. The legs do not look like a green heron's. That was my first tip off. I am not an expert birder, obviously, smile. Thusie researched, this is a Green Heron, probably a youngster, or definitely. On other shot at link, spots on chest and molting. I have more shots that show the molting better. She says, "Cool", so I am happy! Click here!

I did at least half of what the book said. I was pleased) I kind of know her, we both go to the bridge. I was returning to the car, after sunset, with my wide angle, 10-22 mm lens on my camera. The exif says f7, 1/400 or something AND 1600 ISO at 22 mm. She asked me to take a portrait. I thought well, heck, I can try. HAHAHA, I am actually kind of pleased. The sun sets to her left a bit so it probably washed out the sky behind her, or my EC +1 did.

(8/3/2006) I couldn't get out today, I was sick. This is from yesterday.
First time my ferocious Corgis and the Yorkie were not ready to take on and terrorize another dog on the beach. They gaze in wonder......
Poor black beast probably just wanted to play, but my dogs were definitely picking up a different signal.
Skye tried to take him on for the honor of the group (see water splashes as he has run to the Goliath, he came to an abrupt halt and forfeited the match)

8/5/2006
photo replaced w next one: eye in fish visible, plus eye in bird. The problem is that you still can't see them, though I can. But only highly magnified and I don't think I should crop this more.
g
I had a much tighter crop up for awhile, but I didn't like looking at it. It looked soft at that magnification, so maybe it is but that fish's eye is there, not like "in the store", but I can see where it is.Butterflys Making Butterflys.
8/7/2006
G rated here. For more detail, please click on this link. Until now I did not actually know THIS....
Another thing, I asked what happened to a butterfly's wing when it was partially missing. The lizards like to eat butterflys, but sometimes they miss, the butterfly gets away, except for a part of the wing.On his way to the other lake. This is how peaceful and beautiful Magnolia gardens is. (Unless it is March/April and on a weekend)
Please see other versions, with a link to dgrin community, in case you want to thumbs up again, smile.

An Educational Play at Boone Hall Plantation.....no way around it, the weather is hot and sultry.
Those of us who live here were carrying paper napkins and towels to wipe off the perspiration, drinking water to ward of dehydration. This woman was, too, as she told the people watching the history of SC culture as it related to slavery.
Beautiful eyes.
My visiting family is either not feeling well or just wrung out. I feel OK. They are leaving early tomorrow morning. I will miss them.

Sooooo not me!
but I was there, I did not want to be obtrusive, I had no money on me, so I just held the camera down and clicked the shutter a few times. I like it. I could have straightened it, but I like this angle. The color distracted me. I added a bit of noise.
I specifically tried to blow things in the post to make it very contrasty. Since I tend to do the opposite of contrast, I am not sure I blew the whites enough???Jackson's Moving Experience: The Box
That is my grandson, Jackson, playing with one of the moving boxes. Of course the TV is new. A grand new house for my daughter and her family!
I went to see her yesterday. First real meal in their new house, lots of excitement and finally, too, relaxation.
If you are interested, the rest of the photos are at the following gallery.
I tried to get a photo of each person there, including the family cat.
It was hard to decide between a cat photo and this box. I went with the box, but the cat might have been better. It is not a life threatening decision, I guess.

8/17/2006
(If I can't get the Ibis to flock, well, egrets will fly!)
Yes, I know, I don't expect a bird to win. But then again, that is what I shoot. No Merry Go Rounds in town til the first freezing day of fall.
This is a pretty straight forward shot, I was lucky. Then again, I shot anything that flew! And everything.Kingfisher Fishes!
And he has one
Now to take it home.....
8/18/2006
Please check out the first six shots in this gallery. Is any of them better for motion than the egret? In your opinion. I had a lot of trouble working this shot up. The colors seemed weak, as did the message. It is clearly in focus.........there was just something about the "look" that bothered me.
thanks, ginger

For Saturday!
I was OK at the time I took this shot, but the idea that I was totally alone, hopefully, at this large Plantation as it was getting dark, well, it was scary. It is the only way to get the birds!!??
Pretty though, one of those mostly cloudy evenings, with the sun peeking through.
(A variation on the lone tree shot?)Bird flew over my head, well it was about to, as I was watching the Ibis wake up, eat breakfast, or something.
I thought this was a seagull, but the flight wasn't quite right, so I grabbed at it.
Later, when I looked, I was just sick that I had clipped a wing. I mean my first Osprey with a whole, complete, pretty fish, and I had messed up big time.
I decided that when I got around to it, I would work it up anyway, by clipping the other wing. Maybe someone (?) would think I clipped the wing on purpose???
The time came tonight, I worked up the Osprey, but it wasn't quite right so I found me some marsh grass from the same morning, and I blended them.

(Best Osprey I have ever taken even if it is slightly handicapped)"Grandpa"
This is MY dragonfly of the year! With my macro lens. And, I swear that is the ugliest face I have ever seen on a dragonfly photo.
Where are the eyes? The dragons I saw last yr, no lens, but I did see dragons, they were so cute, tilted their little heads. This one didn't like me much.
A crotchety oldman, Grandpa!
Look at this photo large. I dated, then was a friend of a man who looked just like this in the face. He died a few yrs ago.
Reincarnation??
Hi there, Fred!
